Got Milk...

Manhattan Milk is a modern take on old-fashioned dairy delivery. Pillows...

Williams Sonoma Home indoor and outdoor pillows inspire for summer settings and just everyday accents. Here are my favorites:


Summer Dessert...

Strawberry Shortcake

1 box yellow cake mix object

3 large eggs object
1/3 c vegetable oil
1/2 c sugar
plus 3 T
3 pints strawberries, stemmed and sliced
3 c heavy cream


Heat oven to 350° F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, eggs, and oil, along with the amount of water called for by the package directions. Beat until well combined. Divide the batter between the pans. Place in oven and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Let the cakes cool for at least 10 minutes before removing them from the pans. Cool completely before assembling the shortcake. Meanwhile, sprinkle 1/2 cup of the sugar over the strawberries. Set aside at room temperature until the berries release their juices, about 30 minutes. About 15 minutes before serving, combine the cream and the remaining sugar in a medium bowl and whip by hand or with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Place one of the cake layers on a serving platter. Pile on half the strawberries and half the whipped cream. Top with the remaining layer, the rest of the whipped cream, and the remaining strawberries. Serve immediately. Yield: 12 servings

Vanity Fair Photography...

Visit the National Portrait Gallery in London to view an extrodinary exhibition which showcases 150 portraits including classic images from Vanity Fair's early period, displayed for the first time alongside photographs featured in the magazine since its re-launch in 1983. Meatballs...

Adored A16, San Francisco's italian restaurant in the heart of the Marina on Chestnut street, just a stones throw from my old stomping grounds, is known for their delicious meatballs.

Put on your apron, here is the recipe;)

2.5 lbs. ground pork, lamb, or beef
4 oz grated Parmesan
1 lb stale bread, cubed (crust removed)
1 small cooking onion, finely diced
1.5 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/2 bunch parsley, finely chopped
1/2 lb ricottaMilk, as needed
4-5 eggs

Season the meat generously with salt, chile flakes, fennel seed, and oregano. Add the onions, garlic, parsley, and Parmesan (also can add scraps of prosciutto). Mix by hand. Put the bread cubes in a food processor; process until finely crumbled. Add the bread and ricotta to the meat; mix by hand. Add milk to achieve a moist, soft texture. Add eggs; continue to mix by hand until eggs are barely incorporated. (Don’t overmix). Form into balls; place in an oiled roasting pan and roast at 400° until browned. Remove from roasting pan, discard remaining fat, and place the meatballs in a heavy saucepot. Meatballs can then be braised in any combination of pureed tomatoes, wine, stock, and aromatics. Cook at 300° for 2-3 hours; allow to cool in the braising liquid. Reheat the meatballs in the braising liquid. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan and extra virgin olive oil and serve.

Trash is sooo good...

Before my friend showed up to my apartment last night, I said...bring something sweet! Little did I know she was stopping off at the store to pick up chex mix, peanut butter and chocolate chips...I had never tried this quick and dirty recipe before, it was gluttonous & good.

CHOCOLATE PEANUT CHEX TRASH

1 (12 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/4 c butter
1 c peanut butter
(add t vanilla extract)
2 c confectioners' sugar
7 c rice Chex

Melt first three ingredients. Add rice Chex and mix thoroughly. Mix Chex mixture and confectioners' sugar in large "trash bag" and shake. Transfer into bowl, cool in the freezer for 20 minutes and serve.

Summer cocktails...

Caiparinha De Ipanima:
1 1/2 ounces Cachaça de Brazil
2 fresh lime wheels
2 sugar cubes
Ice cubes
~This cocktail is inspired by the flavors of South America. To serve, muddle lime and sugar together, then add the Cachaça and ice. Shake and strain in a glass rimmed with lime sugar. Garnish with lime and twist.

White Sangria:
3 bottles of pinot grigio
1 bottle American chardonnay
1 bunch white grapes (seedless)
1 bunch Chilean red grapes (seedless)
4 scoops passion fruit sorbet
2 oranges cubed
1 Granny Smith apple, cubed
1 Macintosh apple
1 plum
20-30 mint leaves.
Sugar to taste (no more than half a cup)
~Mix all ingredients together in a large punch bowl and chill overnight. Serve in wine glasses.

Acapulco Cliff Hanger:
1 c watermelon chunks, pureed in the blender and strained (makes about 1/3 c)
2 oz light tequila
1 oz lemon simple syrup
1 oz lime juice
1 oz Cointreau
~This inventive drink will take the edge off a scorching afternoon. Fill a chilled glass with ice. Pour everything, except the soda, into the glass and stir to chill. Add soda and stir again. Squeeze the lime on top and drop into the glass. Garnish with a lime wedge and serve.

Pimm Pomm:
2 oz Pimms No. 1
Pomegranate cordial
Sliced Granny Smith apple
~Prepare by pouring two ounces of Pimms No. 1 into a highball glass over ice. Fill with pomegranate cordial and a couple of slices of a Granny Smith apple (and other fresh fruit as desired). Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint, a slice of hot house cucumber and a lime wheel.

Cinco de Mayo El San Juan:
1 1/2 oz soursop concentrate (guanabana juice)
1 oz guava juice concentrate
2 oz (silver preferred)
2 oz water
~Enliven your Mexican fiesta with this creation from tequila sommelier Martin Rosario. After mixing all ingredients, shake for 10 seconds, strain over martini glass, then serve straight up. If concentrate is not available, double the amount of juice.

Diane Elson Bankoff started Elson & Company over 10 years ago in San Francisco. She was a close friend to one of mine, so I've been following her new lines for years. The company was founded with the vision of fusing custom-designed, hand-knotted Tibetan rugs with the 'endless possibilities of sophisticated modern design'. Narciso Rodriguez, Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta and other high- profile fashionistas helped devise the company's "Fashion Underfoot" line, which gives 10 percent of the profits from each piece sold to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer initiative of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Prices range from $30 per square foot to $100 per square foot depending on knot count and the type of rug and are available at retail locations through the US or directly from Elson.

They say that after about 90 minutes, you fall into the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep, where vivid, often surreal dreams occur. Some psychologists claim that dreams influence our waking behavior and decisions, helping us process new, emotionally important information and add it to our conceptual memory system.

Wear Sunscreen...

Which also reminds me of the infamous 'Wear Sunscreen' speech published over a decade ago by Chicago Tribune write Mary Schmich.


Wear Sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.

The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded.

But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine. Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum.

The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year- olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium.

Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them. Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on.

Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths. Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children respected their elders. Respect your elders. Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth. But trust me on the sunscreen.

Conmoto is a company based in Schloss Möhler that designs modern torches, lanterns, fireplaces and garden grills. This fire is an indoor or outdoor innovation that I'd like to warm up to. The cost, I have no idea, it's better to wonder.

Open Restaurant...

Part project, forum and food, Open Restaurant in San Francisco is a trend. The first seating was about a week ago and people are talking. 'OPEN is a place to sit down and have a basic meal for a reasonable price but as it exists at the intersection of performance and everyday life, it turns an ordinary business proposition into a social sculpture.'

Don't quite get it yet? Me neither, but this 5,000 square foot wharehouse restaurant experience, with bleacher seats on the side, sounds like an alternative artistic venture worth checking out. With chefs' participation from places like Chez Panisse how could you go wrong.

The Design 100...

Exploring architecture, green living spaces, furniture, fancy gadgets, the web, fashion and more, Time Magazine ranks the top 100 objects, places and ideas that marked 2007.

The History of History...

History is by definition 'all that is remembered of the past as preserved in writing; a body of knowledge' or 'An academic study of the past or the product of our attempts to understand the past, rather than the past itself'. In The New Yorker, literary critic Jill Lepore writes an article about fake memoirs, factual fictions, and the history of history. She discusses how the boundary between history and fiction have changed since the 18th century and comments on books, novels and the space between. Quoting Godwin, Austen, Defoe and Kagan among others it's an interesting debate.
