You Can Diet and Have Your Margarita Too...

The Real Housewives of New York's Bethenny Frankel encourages readers to think about eating in economic terms rather than the ooey-gooey sweet self-help jargon of typical diet books, in her new book Naturally Thin: Unleash Your Skinny Girl and Free Yourself From a Lifetime of Dieting. Here are the four basic tenets:
1. Your Diet Is a Bank Account. "Eating should be treated like a bank account - if one day you decide that you want to have chocolate cake for breakfast, you can, because there's no 'No,' but you need to account for it," explains Frankel, who confessed during our interview that she had eaten "a bite of cheesecake, a half a piece of red velvet cake and some ice cream" because she was "PMS-ing." "If you spend in one place, you need to save in another."
2. The Differential. "In the differential, you can have turkey chili and meat chili," says Frankel. "To me, the differential between the two isn't that big. I would just as soon have turkey chili as I would meat chili. But there's a huge differential for me between a piece of plain grilled chicken breast and a fatty piece of New York steak. Go for it when the differential is really great to you. You have to find where it's worthwhile to splurge."
3. The Point of Diminishing Return. Frankel explains: "For example, if you order fried calamari, you taste it, it's delicious, have another bite, dip it in the sauce, it's delicious, but then there's a point where it's as good as it's ever going to get. And that's when you stop."
4. Downsize. We need to do this in all other aspects of our lives right now, so why should our diet be any different? "We have unrealistic portions in this country and you can order an appetizer as your main course," says Frankel, who recommends "canceling your membership to the clean plate club - no matter if you're eating broccoli or fried chicken - it's good to get into the habit of leaving a little."

If the concepts are hard to grapple with, Frankel's famed SkinnyGirl margarita goes down easy. "Every single diet says alcohol is the devil," she says. "I'm not promoting it, but I'm saying people have to live their lives."

The SkinnyGirl Margarita on the Rocks

2 ounces clear tequila (Sauza or clear premium tequila (count 1, 2 while you pour; no need for measuring)
A splash of fresh lime juice
A splash of Cointreau, Grand Marnier or Triple Sec
Combine all ingredients over a glass of ice.
Garnish with a lime wedge and salt (or sugar) if you'd like.

Turning Leaf Ad...

A few months ago you may have heard me talk briefly here about the great writing project I was involved in...and a few people have inquired. The origin of this whole project began with 25 women bloggers selected to participate in Turning Leaf Wine's Project Breathe, a blog about and for women, who's busy lives of work, family, obligations and passions required 'breathe' moments. All of our backgrounds varied, but there is a common theme, take time for yourself, enjoy moments doing the things that you love and be you. Sign up on howdoyoubreathe.com to get an email when the site goes live and share your unique breathe moments! For a sneak peak...this is one of the things that I wrote that got me the spot for the ad, as they picked the 4 best writers and photographed us personally. I got to choose a friend (I chose my sister Michaela) to join me and fly to Santa Monica for a few days, all expenses paid and 2 days of photo shoots. Very surreal. Even more surreal was seeing the ad in full-page form in US Weekly, Redbook, Oprah and Real Simple.

Day 10 Prompt from Editor: Pretend you’re playing a writer on a hit show for and about women. Use your personal style, of course, but give us your wit and sarcasm, your most genuine woman (a la Carrie Bradshaw…?) In the most concise and witty way possible, tell your audience what your personal idea of therapy is. And shout out your breathe moments most unique to you… Your unusual ways to unwind! About those unexpected things you do just for yourself…

POST a la Sarah Jane:
friend sessions are free… The best remedy, therapy and ode to sanity - friendship. I have had some hilariously embarrassing moments in my life. I have been locked out of my apartment and had to climb through the kitchen window, I have been unemployed and couch hopped. I have been in good relationships and bad ones. I have had my heart broken. I have lost a parent. I have gained weight, had bad hair days, worn a creative trendy ensemble that would make the back pages of US Weekly’s worst dressed list. I have let the clothes in my bedroom form a tornado pattern on the floor. I have cried so much it hurt and laughed till it hurt. All this - I could not have done without my friends. The greatest witnesses to all of our unflattering splendor. We find out what we’re made of in the most unique times, don’t we? And our friends love us, unconditionally. They’ll come over after a bad date with a bottle of wine at midnight; just to make you laugh and remember who you are, and they’ll support your silence, or your need to repeat the series of events in detail for full analysis. They’ll throw you a pity party, and also make you remember that the pity party has an expiration date. Not to mention, spontaneous dance parties - that’s right up there with eating cookie dough, drinking wine on the porch, a great hike, and a long scenic drive - for greatest all time therapeutic vices. Sometimes, we don’t know what we need, but thankfully, we don’t always have to, with great girlfriends who know with a glance, that the wind has been taken from our sails and it’s time for a very large, guided deep breath, a hug and a getaway car. You know this friend, because she is you, she is me, she is all of us..

Quotes I Love...

Initially in the section of facebook where it says hobbies, interests, favorite quotes....well admittedly I got carried away awhile back, then you realize as the friend list grows, not everyone needs to know this. Keeping it simple I left two quotes I adore..."get busy living" from Shawshank Redemption. And Hepburn's words to the side.

Annenberg Beach House...

Not a member of the elite beach clubs on the coast of LA? Don't fret! The Annenberg Community Beach House just opened it's 5 acre facility to the public in Santa Monica. A splash pad stocked with amenities include a pool, volleyball/beach tennis courts, spaces for events and meetings, beach café, a children’s play area, public art and more. Pool passes are $4 for children, $5 for seniors, $10 for adults – or $24 for a family pass (2 kids, 2 adults).

Providence...

The capital of my home state and where I went to college is a beautiful city! Some of my favorite architecture lies downtown and in the heart of Brown Universities' campus. In the late 90s the project to enhance the arts and culture in Providence made it a renaissance destination year round. But my favorite are the Waterfires beginning in June. A sculpture along the river by Barnaby Evans is torch lit and accompanied by music and hundreds of people walking to enjoy the spectacle. Stroll Federal Hill, Thayer Street shops, take a Gondola ride down the three city rivers and escape to one of the many art galleries and famed restaurants. My fave - Alforno. But the list is look. Check out Cookie Magazine's city guide this month on Providence.
