By this time in the week I'm truly wiped out, work meetings, work dinners, work travel - the trifecta. Ready for the weekend! Ready to relax, take a leisurely drive ~~with the windows down along the coast,~~ scratch that, it's winter in Chicago, I'll be watching movies by the fireplace, hot cocoa, marshmellows, and the Help - I haven't seen it yet and can't wait. I may live in Chicago, but I grew up in RI...so I'm thrilled that the Patriots will be representing in the Superbowl this year. The rivalry of NY and New England teams will make for an exciting game. Nutrition + Fitness Confessions 2012: Day 10...

Well...ho hum, it's day 10 into the new year and I haven't stepped foot in a gym or exercise class. To give myself a slight break on this, I will say - I did not feel well for a few days after coming home from Mexico. But now I'm feeling great and ready to get into a routine. Bar method? Cross-fit? Treadmill? What will it be? I'm going to test out my local spots and see what gets me pumped!

As for the nutritional aspect of attempting to become more healthy this year - there is a long list. I'm happy to report I have not eaten any red meat (one small step), and I've weened myself off of drinking coffee everyday*. My family history consists of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, thyroid...you name it - so at the young age of 35 I know it's wise to pay attention to my health a little more closely. I decided to cut back on red meat - which means, I am actually giving it up cold for a few months to set the stage. Secondly, I never need caffeine - I have ALOT of energy. But, work wipes me out, and in the winter I'm certain I get S.A.D - seasonal affective disorder (which partly makes me laugh, but partly believe is real;) Not to mention, my bf makes the best coffee - that little trifecta is the perfect combination for setting me up to become sluggish every morning due to a coffee addiction I have recently acquired. AND, I was headed that way for life - for the past few months, it was a cup of coffee at home in the morning with the bf, off to work, and a tall non-fat latte with one pump of hazelnut at Starbucks. While that is a mouthful to say, it was a cup of pure yumminess. So Day 10, no morning coffee! Success. I will allow myself a weekend ritual now and then or an afternoon decaf for the taste, but I'm back to my perky morning self after only two weeks of laying off the coffee beans. The rest will come...and recipes will follow on the blog as I discuss my little health and wellness journey this year. My theme is - it's the small things, little strides and steps to keep you on the path. {images via pinterest}

*My Substitues: NO MEAT - Turkey, Pork, Chicken, Fish! NO COFFEE - Green Tea (decaf), Hot water w/lemon, honey and cinnamon.

We sat down with the calendar this weekend and starting planning travel for 2012. Weddings, birthday celebrations, a few trips with family, getaways with the bf, skiing, wine tasting, visiting friends. Travel is one of my favorite things to do. In fact, more than once a month, I admit, I buy a lottery ticket, hoping I may have a shot (ha!) - because isn't fun to think of what your dream destinations would be, with no limit of time and expense? Ah well, just a few days of vacation from work - but we enjoy them to the fullest! Any upcoming trips for you all? Happy New Year! It's a belated welcome to 2012...you'll have to forgive me for not appearing online sooner. I was lounging on a beach with my bf and friends in Mexico. NYE was spent ringing in newlyweds who got married seaside in Puerto Vallarta. While I enjoyed every minute of relaxation and pool-time I'm happy to be back and have shared a collection of pics above;)

I love the dawning of a new day, and a new year. I am so grateful looking back at all of the wonderful things that happened in 2011. I met and moved in with my bf, I met wonderful friends and bloggers in Chicago, while exploring all this city has to offer, and my work team grew here so I am surrounded by new coworkers and remain equally interested and challenged in my field. So excited to share great new themes with you this year!

I woke up today to our first light dusting of snow. Hooray! I can't believe this week, month and year is just flying by. The closer we get to the holidays the more giddy I am. Not only to see family back east, but to have little vaca with the bf and friends. To get you into the holiday spirit I have added a few songs to my Christmas Playlist {called Cozy Winter Mix}. What could be better than gazing at your Christmas tree, drinking hot chocolate (with marshmellows of course!) and sitting by the fire with your loved ones listening to festive tunes. Fa la la. Hi all, I am Alex from Things That Sparkle. I am so excited to be here today sharing the five things I'm "falling for" this fall. Fall is my absolute favorite time of year so limiting this to five is insanely difficult!

1. Lighting a fire. Is there ANYTHING better??

2. Bundling up in sweaters, boots, scarves and jackets. The fashion in fall is by far the best.

3. Baking. I don't know what it is, but the second there's a chill in the air, I feel the need to eat. Anything with pumpkin or apple preferably.

4. Making the switch to red wine, and dark red nails.

5. Fall activities. Including apple orchards and pumpkin patches. Other suggestions are welcome.

The bf and I stumbled upon a cool festival {Chipotle Cultivate} in Lincoln Park and caught a few live bands after hitting the farmer's market for fresh goodies and apple cider donuts;) Perfect fall day. Let the Week Begin...

Ummm, where did September go? My oh my, time flies! I am so lucky to have had a mini-vaca for the last September weekend. It was a perfect: jet off to Vegas with the boyfriend and another couple for pooltime, dinners and sun. It is the ultimate people watching there...and all and all we had a very relaxing time, which sounds ironic for infamous Vegas, but it's true! It was great way to end my birthday celebration week (thanks again bf for fun dinners, endless laughs in Sin City and the sweetest card a girl could hope for). Now I'm headed into whirlwinds of meetings and more meetings this next few weeks!!! In the midst of it all I'm scoping fall fashion trends, more recipes of everything I can think of to cook up in the cozy kitchen this season and things to do in Chicago for the blog. It's official, today is my bday;) Time to get up, and treat myself to a pumpkin latte, head to meetings, talk to friends and sit back for a post work mani/pedi. Always so fun to look back at where we were the year(s) before as you approach turning a year older. It goes by very very quickly...especially this past year, my adventure to Chicago, an unexpected landing spot that has become my home. Going for din din with the bf tonight (location unknown;). We'll be pretty low key so we can save up for our fun weekend ahead. I'm a lucky girl and I don't feel a day over 27!

There is no better time (in my opinion) to visit NYC than the fall. It's beautiful, crisp, not-too-warm, not-too-cold, perfect strolling weather for uptown shopping and downtown dining. I miss the city that never sleeps...it's been close to a year since I moved to Chicago from NY...(coming up in November) and I have yet to revisit my old home. Hi everyone! I'm Sarah, visiting from Note to Self. As a total sentimentalist, I get rather giddy and nostalgic when the seasons begging to change. Autumn is no exception - the leaves, the smells, the food, the costume parties! Oh my... But without further ado, here are the top five things I'm really "Falling For" right now...
1. Revisiting old favorites: as the days grow shorter and the nights longer, you can't go wrong snuggling up to an old favorite. In my queue: Meet Me In St. Louis, You've Got Mail, and Little Women (this version, too.)
2. New comfort foods: Whenever fall rolls around, it's fun to pay extra attention to food blogs and seek out some new comfort food recipes to try. This "tomato cobbler" on Honey & Jam caught my eye right away. Yum!
3. Touches of tartan: Can you go wrong adding some of this classic print to your home or wardrobe? I don't think so. Here in Savannah, Georgia, we can't wear anything wool so soon in the year, but just the look of it in a napkin or table cloth can get us in the fall spirit. Worth reading: this Martha Stewart LIving post on the subject, or a classic book, Tartan: Romancing the Plaid (Amazon, from $59).
4. Penny loafers: These certified classics are everywhere this fall. I say add these to a pair of rolled jeans, café capris, or a cute dress as an alternative to ballet flats. I've been eying this Bass pair for a while now. Time to take the plunge?
5. Gallery walls: They are the excuse we all needed to keep the little things we love close at hand, right? Over the summer, I began the process of curating some keepsakes: prints, vintage scarves, ticket stubs and shopping bags (yes, shopping bags) to frame on a gallery wall. Bring on the hammers and nails! (DIY tip: unroll some butcher paper on the floor, layout and outline your frames, and use the paper as a headache-free guide for nails on the wall.)

Birthday Week Gift Guide...

I feel like I've been so lucky this year! Besides this little wish list of goodies, I'm a sucker for sappy cards (which I keep forever) and fresh flowers (that I usually buy for myself or get from my mother;) But, let's start this off with the fact that I'm also obsessed with salty chocolate covered caramels and it never hurts to get a gal something pretty;) I would love a few classics for the fall wardrobe, and am going to attempt to bake up a storm in the kitchen this season trying out new pie recipes, so the scalloped ceramic dish is perfect! It was also brought to my attention this weekend that I need more picture frames to update the latest and greatest memories with friends and loved ones. I'm so grateful this birthday for amazing friends, family and my love;)
