Eco-Bounty...

My favorite site, Trend Watching sent out the March newsletter highlighting 12 eco sub-trends. “ECO-BOUNTY refers to the numerous opportunities, both short and long term, for brands that participate in the epic quest for a sustainable society. Some of these opportunities exist despite the current recession, others are fueled by it, not in the least because of new rules and regulations. Downturn-obsessed brands who lose their eco-focus will find themselves left out in the cold when the global economy starts recovering."

Clean Coal is a Lie...

The Waterkeepers Alliance unveiled their site last week, Dirty Lie - exposing the truths about the destructiveness of coal and it's entire life cycle—from mining to transportation to scrubbing to burning to waste storage. After reading, if you had previously bought into the $40M 'clean coal' campaign, you will quickly be disuaded of that oximoron and realize that everything about the use of coal is inherently dirty. The truth is that coal pollutes our water, communities, forests and mountains, kills wildlife and contributes to climate change, in addition to poisoning our drinking water and our fish with mercury and other toxins.

Community Supported Agriculture Farms...

Whether you live in a city or the 'burbs, it's possible to have fresh, locally grown produce delivered to your doorstep. There are over 1,000 community-supported-agriculture farms (CSAs) around the country. For a share or subscription fee (or sometimes just for getting your hands dirty for a few hours on the farm), you'll receive fresh-from-the-farm vegetables and fruits—and possibly even meat, dairy, or prepared food. Not only a way to help support the farms, but a smart way to sustain living. Check out the list of farms in your region.

Lucrative Opportunities in the Down Economy...

Entrepreneur magazine's trend watch for opportunities in 2009.

GREEN Decades in the making, this $209 billion market has its roots in everything from water to energy to food. Look especially to organics, clean energy, alternative fuels, and water reuse and reclamation services.

ECONOMY What goes upmust come down. Consumers are no longer trading up when making their purchase decisions, but rather trading down.

HEALTH Thanks to the web and aging boomers, we know more than ever about our health, especially what may harm it. Sectors from exercise to plastic surgery are open for the entrepreneurially inclined.

MILLENNIALS Want to bridge the generational gap? It may take a little research, but you’ll find opportunities in marketing, web apps, social networking, and anything that promotes culture and community.

BOOMERS Representing the biggest wealth transfer in history, these individualists started the green movement and are ready to cash in on the environment, health, financial planning, travel and everything in between.

DIGITAL The web holds endless opportunities for business pioneers, and almost everything you’ll ever do from here on out will somehow tie back to it.

ODDS & ENDS The fact that cities are creating laws against trans fats and that companies are selling 100-calorie snack bags doesn’t take away from the popularity of bacon. Consider the Bacon of the Month Club and odd offerings like bacon mints.

Electric Mini Coop...

I want this car! I have always loved Mini's. Singer James Blunt was one of the first to receive the new electric Mini Cooper. The EV was created under a partnership with Hybrid Technologies and NASA. Now, it’s been announced that HT is ready to put the conversion process into commercial production — allowing us to drive some of the first all-electric lithium powered cars early next year. Yay!

More Green Moms...

The Green movement is making incredible strides all over the globe. One notable newcomer is Chrstine Gardner (my friend Monica's cousin). What began as a research project for her 8 year old daughter’s school, has developed into a research and blog website, specifically aimed at mother’s who want to “green” their lives. More Green Moms launched last week. Relevant to all, it provides literature, best practices, and other helpful resources. Christine says eloquently:

"The story is relevant to all people, whether you are a parent or a pet owner, a Californian or a New Yorker, a male or a female, a conservationist or a voracious consumer, because as Americans, we are linked by a common vulnerability to lax protective measures and loose safety standards that are proving to place us all in harm’s way. It’s so very hard to figure out where the hazards lie and how we can better safeguard ourselves against them. If nothing else, my hope is that this work might catalyze a broader quest for a national demand to protect our people and our natural resources from irreparable damage. Clearly, with the rising rates of obesity, infertility, autism, cancer and a myriad of other ills, we are already paying dearly for our reckless living. But what I find most tragic is that so many of us are skipping along a bright path of ignorance. My sunny journey ended only last summer when I began to truly understand what was at stake in the battle for the American wallet."

A wonderful and compassionate mission statement that will hopefully help to spread awareness and further each of our communities' positive environmental efforts. I admire her initiative!

Green Living...

Domino Magazine is getting environmentally conscious with their gallery for making greener choices in your home. Suggestions like selecting a Wolf cooking range and an Asko dishwasher, which uses less water and electricity than ordinary units, are great ideas for going pro-environment in your kitchen. Also, using chemical-free sustainable furniture, earth-friendly paint, eco flooring and vintage finds - you can be green in no time.
