New Year's in New York...

Spiked punch, brunch & rock & roll. What to do, what to do...avoid Times Square perhaps, that's the best bet.

Live Music: Good old Hall and Oats are playing tonight at the Mohegan Sun. If you're not into the 80s, MSG is hosting one of my favorite bands, My Morning Jacket and for a more calm and classical mix, the Philharmonic are performing in Lincoln Center.

Nightime: Hotel Gansevort - although pricey, is a beautiful location. Aspen Social , Kingswood, Barcibo, Bar & Books.

Brunch: I'm doing the Park Avenue Winter $35 prix fixe Champagne Brunch...Yay! You can also hit up, Norma's, Morandi, Five Points, Freemans, JG Melon's for a bloody bull & burger or Nero.

Happy New Year everyone! x

Predictions Anyone?

Now, I don't want to be a buzz kill as you pop the bubbly for New Year's, but it's hard not to imagine this time next year without wondering what changes in the world and in the US will take place in 2009. There is no doubt it will be an interesting year. Have you heard that the United States is going to fall next year, yes our very own balkanization? Russian academic Igor Panarin just said so. According to his theory reported in the Wall Street Journal, here's how it will go down. Mass immigration, economic decline, and moral degradation will trigger a civil war. Then the dollar will collapse, and the United States will splinter into six separate unions, with Alaska (and presumably Governor Sarah Palin) falling under Russian control...worried yet? Of course, Panarin is a former KGB analyst, so if you're like me, you're thinking...this theory is jibberish. However, I love the effort to plant the theory in hopes it goes viral and drives us all deep into self-defeat and madness, as if our own media doesn't try to accomplish that very thing everyday. Head games were so much fun during the Cold War, why not bring them back? Nonetheless, an intersting read.

Happy New Year, comrades!

Inside the Actors Studio...

Since its premiere, Inside the Actors Studio has had over 200 guests. Of those guests, there have been 74 Academy Award winners: 8 directors; four screenwriters; 61 actors and actresses; and two musicians. While most of the show is a one-on-one interview conducted by Lipton, this is followed by the host submitting a questionnaire to the guest. The questionnaire concept was originated by French television personality Bernard Pivot, after the Proust Questionnaire (in the sidebar of blog). The ten questions Lipton asks are:

What is your favorite word? Adore

What is your least favorite word? Settle

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally? Wit, Inner Happiness, Generosity, Sincerity, Self-Awareness, Compassion, Conviction, Spirituality, Loyalty & Adventure

What turns you off creatively, spiritually or emotionally? Ambiguity, Apathy, Complacency, Dishonesty, Arrogance, Entitlement

What sound or noise do you love? Music & Thunderstorms

What sound or noise do you hate? Alarm Clock

What is your favorite curse word? I plead the fifth

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Singer, ha;)

What profession would you not like to do? Hmmm. I would not like to work in a fast food establishment.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? "This is just the beginning"

LA craze, YogaHop offers a celebratory twist to standard yoga by encorporating hip-hop, rock and pop music, and all the energy of a dance party. The result is an East meets West yoga style that’s athletically fulfilling and spiritually soothing. A little New Year's Tradition History...

The tradition of the New Year's Resolutions goes all the way back to 153 B.C. Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar.

With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and forward to the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked for forgiveness from their enemies and also exchanged gifts before the beginning of each year.

With New Year's upon us, here's a look at some of the good luck rituals from around the world. They are believed to bring good fortune and prosperity in the coming year.

AUSTRIA - The suckling pig is the symbol for good luck for the new year.

ENGLAND - The British place their fortunes for the coming year in the hands of their first guest. They believe the first visitor of each year should be male and bearing gifts. Traditional gifts are coal for the fire, a loaf for the table and a drink for the master.

WALES - At the first toll of midnight, the back door is opened and then shut to release the old year and lock out all of its bad luck. Then at the twelfth stroke of the clock, the front door is opened and the New Year is welcomed with all of its luck.

HAITI - In Haiti, New Year's Day is a sign of the year to come. Haitians wear new clothing and exchange gifts in the hope that it will bode well for the new year.

SICILY - An old Sicilian tradition says good luck will come to those who eat lasagna on New Year's Day, but woe if you dine on macaroni, for any other noodle will bring bad luck.

SPAIN - In Spain, when the clock strikes midnight, the Spanish eat 12 grapes, one with every toll, to bring good luck for the 12 months ahead.

PERU - The Peruvian New Year's custom is a spin on the Spanish tradition of eating 12 grapes at the turn of the year. But in Peru, a 13th grape must be eaten to assure good luck.

GREECE - A special New Year's bread is baked with a coin buried in the dough. The first slice is for the Christ child, the second for the father of the household and the third slice is for the house. If the third slice holds the coin, spring will come early that year.

JAPAN - The Japanese decorate their homes in tribute to lucky gods. One tradition, kadomatsu, consists of a pine branch symbolizing longevity, a bamboo stalk symbolizing prosperity, and a plum blossom showing nobility.

CHINA - For the Chinese New Year, every front door is adorned with a fresh coat of red paint, red being a symbol of good luck and happiness.

UNITED STATES - The kiss shared at the stroke of midnight in the United States is derived from masked balls that have been common throughout history. As tradition has it, the masks symbolize evil spirits from the old year and the kiss is the purification into the new year.

NORWAY - Norwegians make rice pudding at New Year's and hide one whole almond within. Guaranteed wealth goes to the person whose serving holds the lucky almond.

Twilight Series...

I'm officially hooked. And I don't say this kind of thing lightly...I have a new favorite book. Twilight. I had heard the buzz from the movie, mostly the admirers gawking at the handsome characters on the red carpet, I was mildly curious but not rushing to the theater. My sister-in-law let me borrow the first of the series of four books this past weekend. I was riveted. Starting on the train at 8:30pm last night and finishing - well a few hours before work. I barely blinked. I turned every last page and I felt I was reading one of the greatest- most loyal love stories. Looking forward to the next three...

Surfwise Dorian Paskowitz, once a well known doctor, decided to trade in his success for life on the beach. While traveling the world in search of the next great wave, Dorian met and married Juliette, and in short - they had 9 children. They were all raised in a camper that went ocean to ocean. Planning a trip to Whistler Blackcomb...

A couple years ago, I took a trip to Whistler Blackcomb for a friend's bday. We flew from SF to Vancouver and drove to Whistler where we rented an amazing house that slept 12 for a long weekend. It's one of my favorite mountains to ski. I can't wait for round II (hopefully in the near future). Here are a few tips from NY Mag for your trip - on where to ski, eat and relax.

Runs: Whistler Blackcomb has two mountains, appropriately enough named Whistler and Blackcomb. If you are on Whistler, check out the Peak chair area, which has access to the numerous open bowls (West Bowl and Bagel Bowl) and the “Saddle,” or experience the famous Peak to Creek run (this is a fun one;). Also head over to the Symphony Amphitheatre. Year after year, the best runs on Blackcomb are Rock ’n’ Roll and Ridge Runner, which are both great for beginner and intermediate riders. For those seeking a bit more adventure, check out the terrain accessed through Spanky’s Ladder or Blackcomb Glacier. And lastly board the new Peak 2 Peak gondola, the world's highest lift. Here’s the trail map.

Gear: Ride on Burton Feelgood ES, while the Burton Custom X, with infinitely adjustable EST binding mounts, is excellent for Whistler Blackcomb’s varied terrain. Skiers should check out the Kästle MX98—they are big mountain skis. The Smith I/O goggles; Anon Majestic goggles and Bern for helmets.

Après-Ski Scene: My favorite is Longhorn, at the base of Whistler, where live music gets people dancing on tables in their ski boots. In the eve you can also hike up the bobsled track and watch the crazy bobsledders go by, or go moonlight ice-skating on Alta Lake. Don’t miss Garibaldi Lift Company! Dusty’s, Tommy Africa’s, and Garfinkel’s. Or just relax, and get a thai massage at Nita Lake Lodge.

Where to eat: If you are looking to splurge, try Araxi or Bearfoot Bistro. Sachi Sushi is a local favorite. Umberto’s has excellent Italian food, while Rimrock has a cozy, ski-town atmosphere. In terms of mountaintop dining, nothing beats Crystal Hut. Also check out Caramba, 21 Steps, or Sushi Village. are great for dinner. For breakfast try Elements Urban Tapas Parlour.

Hotels: The
Fairmont Chateau Whistler, at the base of Blackcomb, is famous for its luxury accommodations. Adara Whistler Hotel is a funkier, boutique option or go online and find luxury house rentals!
